The 30s
Since the 25th of August 1930, the largest pedagogical university in the region, now called the Ural State Pedagogical University (USPU), has its beginnings.

The 30s were an era of ideological struggle not for life but for death, unprecedented repression and persecution. At the same time, the university trained brilliant scientists, inventors, specialists. The institute opened sections: mining, metalworking, chemical-technological, industrial, agricultural, physical-technical, chemical-technological, general literature, polytechnical work.

Gradually the chairs were formed: socio-economic, chemistry, physics, pedagogics, mathematics and technical mathematics.

The 40s
1940. The international situation becomes more intense . Students master military affairs. The institute has circles: small arms, parachute, radio operators, air defense, chemical defense and sanitary.

And then there was a war. In 1941-1943, 57 teachers and employees of the institute, 186 students, including 70 girls, joined the ranks of front-line soldiers. In 1944-1945, such large appeals no longer existed: the Urals needed more and more teachers (21 orphanages and 4 boarding schools were evacuated to the Sverdlovsk Region, the number of schools increased by 150 during the war years).

In August-September 1941, the Sverdlovsk State Pedagogical Institute transfers to military organizations all its educational buildings and dormitories. Many teachers went to the front, but large specialists from the evacuated universities and research institutions of Moscow, Leningrad and other cities came to work at the institute.

Students work on peat bogs, they clear paths from drifts on the railway, unload wagons with wounded, with factory equipment, dig pits for the foundations of buildings, trenches for water pipes, cables, and care for the wounded in hospitals. Throughout the war years, a sanitary squad has been active (about 100 people). The squad has its own sponsored hospital. By the end of the year, the institute has 150 donors.
In November 1943, graduate school was opened at the institute. The first graduate students are enrolled.

It was May 1945. The end of the war. Victory. The Institute staff has always honored the memory of teachers, staff, students who fell on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. There are forty-one of them, their names are imprinted on mournful boards in the buildings of the institute.

The 50-70s
The 50s was time of very turbulent student life. The formation of circles had an appeared as an avalanche. All associations were led by professionals.

The decisions of the 20th Congress of the CPSU oriented the school toward the implementation of polytechnical education. The institute introduces engineering, heat engineering, automotive engineering, electrical engineering with installation works and workshops.

In July 1957, the first virgin detachment of the Institute "Rovesnik" was formed. The first virgin Land - in Khakassia (Krasnoyarsk region). In 1957-1959 about 300 students worked on virgin lands.

Since the late 50s, the number of applicants for the first time exceeded admission plans; competitive admission to universities begins.

The need for teachers and the strengthening of the material base of the institute made it possible to open new specialties, faculties, and chairs.

The 80s
In the mid-80s, first personal computers appeared, which changed the lifestyle very abruptly. The first computer class from Japanese Yamaha cars appeared at the university. In the mid-90s, they were safely decommissioned. From that moment began the era of IBM PC, which continues to this day.

In October 1980, for the first time, the university’s spontaneous and very active cooperation with schools was formalized into a single comprehensive program “Pedagogical School”

Every year, scientific activity expands at a teacher training institution. In October 1984, the Institute held an inter-university student scientific conference, which represented 54 pedagogical universities of the country.

Summer 1985 VDNH USSR: the institute was awarded a diploma of the I degree, as well as a gold medal.

In 1987, the construction of the Institute's complex of buildings for 3300 students was completed. Today, Ural State Pedagogical University is the only university in Yekaterinburg with a student campus. 

The 90s
Came the 1991st year of the perestroika. The ideology of the state has changed dramatically. The party organization of the Institute ceases its activity, the Komsomol is reorganized.

In 1994, almost all faculties switched to multi-level training. Bachelor's and master's degrees are essential signs of compliance of higher education with international standards.

In the 90-ies established, expanded and strengthened direct partnerships of faculties and chairs of the Institute with foreign universities.

Conducted by the Ministry of defense in 1994, the rating of scientific activity of 108 pedagogical universities of Russia determined the University third place.

Widely known scientific school of A.S. Belkin, M.A. Galaguzova, K.I. Demidova, D.M. Komskoy, G.M. Korostelev, N.L. Leiderman, J.M. Proskurina, P.S. Popel, L.Y. Rubina, V.N. Soloviev, G.I. Tarshis and others.

January 1998. The University is the third pedagogical University in Russia, which has been granted a license for the introduction of the second stage of higher professional education – master's degree.

During these years, USPU became the head University of the Ural-Siberian zone for the targeted training of scientific and pedagogical staff for other universities.

The 2000s
In 2014, the University was chosen as the operator of the implementation of the all-Russian sports complex "Ready for work and defense" in the Sverdlovsk region. Later, in 2015, the Public chamber of the Russian Federation recognized the experience of implementing the GTO complex in the Sverdlovsk region as the most effective in the regions.

In 2015, the University was awarded a diploma signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin for active participation in the Patriotic education of citizens.

The University annually passes all indicators of monitoring the effectiveness of universities, confirming its high status.

The number of foreign students studying at the University is growing every year.
