USPU implements more than 500 research projects in 26 major research areas annually, corresponding to the profile of the university as well as to the Strategy of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation. There are 5 postgraduate councils to defense both master's theses and doctoral dissertations.

In our university scientific activity is carried out in 3 centers: scientific and Educational center of expertise and promotion of the Russian language and culture, Scientific and educational center of innovative activity, Scientific and educational center "Rasplav".

4 scientific journals are regularly published at USPU, included in the List of leading peer-reviewed scientific journals and publications of the Higher Attestation Commission, as well as in the European Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH PLUS) database: "Pedagogical Education in Russia", "Political Linguistics", and "Special Education". The journal "Philology Class" is also included in the Web of Science Core Collections and Emerging Source Citation Index (ESCI). There are 18 university periodicals included in Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI) of the Russian Universal Scientific Electronic Library.

All participators of the process of scholarly communication (authors, reviewers, editors and the Editorial Board members) are to follow the ethical norms described below, which have been worked out on the basis of internationally recognized norms and standards of scientific ethics and the best practices of the leading publishers of academic periodicals, and specifically the recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Declaration of the Association of Science Editors and Publishers (ASEP, Russia) «Ethical Principles of Scientific Publications». The Editorial Board of the Journal acts in keeping with the legislation of the Russian Federation.

Every year USPU employees win grants with state funding, take part in technical or innovative collaborative activities, participate in the implementation of State tasks and receive subsidies for the realization of scientific research in the Federal target programs.

In addition, Ural State Pedagogical University is involved in various programs of socio-economic development of the Ural region, for example, comprehensive program "Ural Engineering School" – to design the concept of the Engineering Lyceum of the Ural Mining Metallurgical Company (UMMC).

Scientists of the Ural State Pedagogical University are the members of committees and expert commissions in socially important regional events: "Technical Glory" (the innovation ideas competition), International Industrial Exhibition "Innoprom-2018", "Way to Success" headed by the Ministry of General and Vocational Education of the Sverdlovsk Region, the regional competition "Teacher of the Year", "Scientific Olympus" sponsored by Department of Youth Policy of the Sverdlovsk region.

International research activity at Ural State Pedagogical University is an integral part of the university development and the training of our staff. It contributes to the competitiveness of scientific and teaching staff and strengthen the "external visualization" of USPU scientific employee`s achievements at the international level. Priority tasks are to strengthen existing and develop new bilateral and multilateral forms of cooperation with foreign educational institutions. Among the key areas are: realization of international scientific events on the basis of USPU; the participation of university teachers and students in international scientific events abroad (Abkhazia, Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, etc.); conducting competitive research and innovative developments joined with foreign partners (Karl Eberhard University (Germany), Brest State University named after A. Pushkin (Republic of Belarus), R. Steiner University (Norway); attracting foreign authors and experts to publish articles in scientific journals; research to study Russian as a foreign language, as well as to popularize the Russian language and culture in foreign countries; cooperation agreements with foreign educational institutions – 26 agreements (Germany, Kazakhstan, China, Poland, Slovakia, USA, etc.).

The staff of the Scientific and Educational Center "Rasplav" cooperates actively with colleagues in Slovakia, France, Germany, China, Sweden, India, Austria, the USA (subject title "Experimental, theoretical and numerical study of the structure and properties of metals and alloys") in order to publish joint articles and hold international scientific conferences.

The Institute of Music and Art Education provides various opportunities for international cooperation: the training of graduate students in vocal art; conducting international music competitions, workshops; international educational projects and scientific events for teaching staff; joint publications.

Students of Ural State Pedagogical University take an internship at various universities abroad, including Erasmus+ program "Mobility for students and teachers of higher educational institutions" (Poland, Slovakia). USPU successfully implements distant forms of international cooperation: the International Virtual Cultural and Educational Project "Global Partners in Education" and the Cultural and Educational Project "Intercultural Dialogue in Russian" (USA, Poland, Slovakia). In order to promote Russian education abroad and to present the university’s educational programs, Ural State Pedagogical University holds summer and autumn schools "Learn and study in Russian" for students from China.
